Concept: Geometric shapes are all around us, in the building we live in, the cars we travel in and even in the food we eat. Children recognize these shapes early even if they do not know the correct vocabulary to name the different shapes they see. Children have informal knowledge of geometry during the early years. To build on this, activities are designed around development of appropriate vocabulary and opportunities to practice identifying geometric shapes in the classroom and the real world. This will also help the children to informally begin developing their concept of special sense.
This theme is intended to build awareness in children and motivate them to observe, differentiate, compare and relate different shapes they notice in and around their environment. They will be encouraged to use shape related vocabulary to describe. They will also, through exploring and exposure begins to name and identify differences in shapes. As children use two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes during this theme, they engage in different activities that require them to begin to take a closer look at shapes. What make a square a square? What makes a cube a cube? How are squares different from triangles?
You can support your child’s learning by playing the game “I spy” with him or her. Pick an object that you can see. Give clues about the shape of the object. Have your child guess what object you are describing. Start with easy clues and move to more difficult clues.
